Egypt's education sector includes 27 state universities and 27 private universities, with tertiary enrolment of 3.6 million in 2023 and projected growth to 5.6 million by 2032. The private education sector is growing faster than the public sector (6.3% vs 3.6% CAGR) yet still accounts for only 10.6% of students—an indicator of enormous potential for institutions seeking high-quality recruits.

Egyptians choose a wide range of destinations; the UAE hosts just over 5,000 students but at least ten other countries each host over 1,000 Egyptians, ranging from regional hubs such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar to popular destinations like the US, France and the UK.
Egypt hosts over 50,000 international students and offers numerous scholarship programmes—including Fulbright, Qalaa Holdings and the U.S.–Egypt Higher Education Initiative—which support outbound study.

Egypt has an outbound student mobility ratio of 5.6. According to UNESCO, a total number of 50,815 tertiary level students are studying overseas. The three most popular destinations are Germany, Turkey and Jordan.
